"Men do not care how nobly they live, but only how long, although it is within the reach of every man to live nobly, but within no man's power to live long." - Seneca

hmmm,yeah sure,I believe so..

how bout you?

ghee: I definitely believe it is within everyone's power to live nobly - unless, of course, free will is an illusion.

made me stop and think!

So true and yet why do we so often focus our energies on that which we have restricted/no control over?!

kaymac: Seneca and Marcus Aurelius have always been two of my favourite philosophers. The are both Stoic philosophers.

breal: I guess for the same reason we scrub so stubbornly at tough spot, because we feel more effort will get it clean.

by the word 'men', does it mean men, as in the male gender...or men as in the general term?

hehe. just want to wish you and your kids a happy weekend richard :)

vina: of course it means humanity ingeneral. Usually I will gender neutralize quotes, but, in this case, I was too lazy.

On eof my favourites is:

"Waste no more time arguing what a good person should be. Be one." - Marcus Aurelius

(Of course, the original translation I have use man instead of person.)
