What is the context in which this is said?

tin-tin: I'm sure they do.

barbara: I can't find my copy of The Rebel at the moment and it is not available on the Internet. However, I did find a longer snippet The rebel defies more then he denies. Originally, at least, he does not suppress God; he merely talks to him as an equal. But it is not a polite dialogue. It is a polemic animated by the desire to conquer. The slave begins by demanding justice and ends wanting to wear a crown.

I have to confess that I was somewhat disappointed by the book, which is probably why I don't retain much of it - aside from that quote.
