Went to one of my favourite stores this morning and noticed that they had taken down almost all their Christmas displays and replaced them with Valentine’s Day displays.

(Note: I haven't even finished with my Christmas cards yet - not to mention that all the Christmas shopping is still outstanding.)

A friend of mine is an ovo-lactic vegetarian. This means that in addition to the plant matter he consumes, he also consumes dairy products and eggs. Dairy products I can accept, but eggs? … hmm, I wasn’t so sure - it sounds a bit like those vegetarians who say they eat chicken and fish. After all, the egg is an animal product. Le Pingouin is probably not what you think it is.

Discovered over the weekend that le pingouin is not a penguin, but a type of auk known as a Razorbill . The French translation for penguin is manchot . Apparently, this is a common error. Not surprising since many languages clearly have some sort of agreement on penguin: pingüinos (Spanish), pinguine (German), pikkewyn (Afrikaans), pinguino (Italian), pingwiny (Polish), pingvinfélék (Hungarian), pingüim (Portugese).
