barbara: no, not quite. I prefer to quote it as "When men are inhuman to others, take care not to feel towards them as they do to others."

Maybe I will just change the quote.

tin-tin: I think it is about maintaining the respect and dignity inherent in each person, even if that person show it towards others.

Poignant. I think there is suggetion of a chain reaction here...when we start to feel towards them as they do to others, we may in turn find ourselves treating them they way they do to others.
